Streets Are For Everyone

Kirkwood residents love to walk and bike. On any given day in our community, children are riding their bikes to school or the Kirkwood Library, families are walking around the Farmers' Market, and residents of all ages are walking, biking, and running for exercise on our streets and sidewalks.

Focusing on Safety

On March 17, 2022, the City Council adopted the Vision Zero Kirkwood Action Plan via Resolution 33-2022.  A copy of the complete plan can be found here: Vision Zero Kirkwood Action Plan.  For further background information, you can also find the appendix here: Vision Zero Kirkwood Action Plan Appendix.  During this process, the City also developed a new Complete Streets Policy that is one of the tools to help imlpement the Vision Zero Action Plan.  The City Council also adopted this Complete Street Policy on March 17, 2022 which can be found here:  Kirkwood Complete Street Policy.
Vision Zero takes a data-driven approach to understanding where crashes are occurring and why.
  • View the crash analysis report to gain a better understanding of crashes in Kirkwood city limits over the last ten years.  See how changes in our behavior as pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers can prevent crashes in the future.

Vision Zero in Kirkwood

Safer travel for everyone on Kirkwood’s street system is behind the Vision Zero Action Plan’s development. The City of Kirkwood continuously strives for safe transportation for all roadway users — motor vehicles, pedestrians, bikers, and others.

The Vision Zero initiative is a vision for zero traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries in Kirkwood. In addition, it seeks to increase safety, health, and equitable mobility for all.

Vision Zero planning focuses on human behavior with an emphasis on design solutions that account for human error and awareness to improve human behavior. Safe walking and biking will be the priority of Vision Zero in the city.

The Action Plan will be formed with extensive data and local strategies to reflect residents’ input and community priorities.  A crash analysis report, which evaluates crashes in Kirkwood over the last ten years, is serving as a foundation for our planning.

While Vision Zero is in development, the City is also exploring the possibility of a Complete Streets policy, which would support transportation planning for all modes of travel.

Vision Zero Continues Kirkwood's Commitment to Walking and Biking

Vision Zero builds on the City’s investment in walking and biking facilities with safety in mind. Recent improvements include walking and biking facilities, high visibility crosswalks, enhanced pedestrian signals, and others.
